A shout-out to all the people I'd been trying (by leaving mysterious hints about female friendship, female pilot in WWII and lots of tissues needed) to convince to eventually read Elizabeth Wein's Code Name Verity - on a thread of Rachel Manija's, I remember, and wherever else...

Code Name Verity

Don't worry - I'll only be doing this until February 10th (when the blog tour ends)

CODE NAME VERITY is released today in the UK (and if USians don't want to import the pretty UK edition via, they can wait until May this year - as can the Canadians - and buy it then)!

Code Name Verity

E.Wein is doing a blog tour (her publisher has a new line called Electric Monkey and CNV is a launch title) this week and just today spoke on BBC Scotland about the book - there's a podcast to download for non-UK people. Her part starts around 25 minutes (ends at 35 minutes) and apart from having a nice speaking voice I'm very thankful that she's talking a bit slower than the interviewer - I realise how rarely I hear real English spoken in a dialect at normal speed these days, heh.

Links & Reviews as I come across them:

There's even a pretty nifty book trailer (although I wish they had chosen a British song..)

Okay, you've convinced me - that sounds pretty cool! It's going onto my wishlist right now :-). (When I'll ever get to it is another question, but if it's on the list, it will be read at some point.)

Yay, mission accomplished!

It'll be available in e as well, from what I gather, so the long tail of acquisition works, too.
And then you can purchase it for your library (once you have fallen in love with Maddie and "Verity").

Also, the Bookdepository is quite happy to send to New Zealand (, shipping included.

Ah yes, the Book Depository and I have been friends for over a year - NZers can get books there for the price that Americans and Europeans pay for them, rather than the 100% mark-up we have to pay here in NZ (and no shipping costs, either). It's a thing of beauty! :-)

Ah, so that's where that came from! (I didn't recognise the email address and was a bit puzzled :-). Thanks very much - time to start plotting my next purchases :-).

Heee, perfect!

Yes, I have different e-mails for online friendship and shopping (actually two different ones for shopping, heh) - that was my PayPal one. And I have one for business contacts, heh.

geez louise, you're like a one-woman invasion force! If this turns into a bestseller you will have to take most of the credit!

*grin* I think Egmont UK already had a bit of an idea of what they potentially had in CNV when they made you launch title for their new imprint, organised a blog tour and created a video. Not to mention you have three different publishers for the book, so people in the English speaking world are definitely convinced this has oomph.

But I DO take credit for about 100 new listings of the book on GoodReads reader lists - I kept an eye on the numbers of people who listed the book and after Ana's review they jumped from about 400something to 541 (oops 577 now that I have returned to the PC) as far as I remember. The thing about the Booksmugglers is that a lot of other book bloggers and authors read them! They're a catalyst blog. Ana tweeted on twitter like crazy right after she had finished (she wrote me an e-mail on Tursday night around midnight, which is why I only got it on Friday, just so glad she was pointed in CNV's direction).

Others have had an eye on the book, too and would have gotten around to reading it (and were already reviewing it on GR, etc.) but Ana's 10 really put a bit more oomph into the desire (I bet Chachic will now be able to convince Angie from Angieville much easier to give you a try - another catalyst blog).

yes, that Booksmugglers review is a real coup. And I do think the online attention is hugely important - I went into my local bookstore today (a chain) and they were astonishingly unhelpful / unenthusiastic - "all our ordering is done through the manager and he's on holiday till march" - GAH. I will keep on badgering them though!

That's what the Americans say a LOT in their posts. I had hoped it would be better in the UK. No longer buying books in my native language has made me completely unaware of how this is handled over in Germany nowadays.

I am getting the impression that Egmont have pitched it more aggressively to the independents than the chains, and it *has* been spotted by some of my friends in independent bookshops throughout the UK - well-displayed, too. Unfortuantely we haven't got an independent bookshop in Perth. It's early days yet as far as sales are concerned, so fingers crossed. (and the reviewers are all saying, "THIS IS THE ONE OF THE BEST BOOK'S I'VE EVER READ." Which is nice. If a bit ego-inflating.)

Enjoy THAT while it lasts, I say ^^. You have enough perspective not being a debut author. And if CNV is a huge hit, you'll be getting all the envious people coming out of the woodwork, heh.

well, now, ENVY. There's a thought. I have on occasion been the object of vitriol, but have never been well-known enough to induce envy. I shall consider myself warned. (And, I hope, armed a little.)
