I'm crossposting this from my real blog at www.bookish.net, as there are certainly more people who have friended me and read this, than there are people reading my blog ;)

I was browsing my usual comic sites and reading up on their recommendations when Johanna Draper Carlson recommended the first collection of Unshelved - a web comic strip in the tradition of Peanuts, Garfield or Calvin & Hobbes (I think Dewey could be a grown-up Calvin, but I don't think either the squirrel or the Book Beaver qualify as Hobbes).

Loving books I went and looked, happy to find that the archive was a click away and free! I read for hours and then bookmarked an archive page to read more the next time, but in reality that was a bit to slow and I don't like reading comics off the screen - only if nothing else is possible - so when Comics Worth Reading advertised the offer of all five books for $60 (shipping included) I ordered forthwith (not really being sure whether it would apply to sending it to Germany).

It took a while for the shop to process my order (this is a small side business for the creators, not their main job), but they kept me uptodate via e-mail all the while. Last Friday the parcels arrived safe and sound (with tiny drawings by the artist in the frontispiece), but I was shocked by reading in the invoice that it had cost them $37 just to ship it to me. This is the e-mail dialogue that followed:

Hello Overdue People,

The comics arrived bright and shiny today. Thank you so much. But I read on the invoice that you had to pay 37 Dollars for shipping alone, since the offer of free shipping also was possible for sending it to Germany. Do you guys have a paypal account where I can send half the amount, as I don't want to rip you off? The tiny sketch looks pretty cool for being one of 1200 ^^.

Thank you again!

Returning from my short stay with my parents I found the following e-mail today (the shop person had been on holiday, according to a previous answer e-mail):

Hi ...,

Wow thank you so much for noting the cost of shipping to another country. We know it is expensive but we are glad that you are able to enjoy it. So thank you so much for your offer and all I can say is just to keep reading and enjoying our comic strip. That support alone will put smiles on all our faces.

Thanks,
Jana Kincl
Store Manager

In summary, not only is the comic really good, but the people there stand behind their product to the extent of taking a loss just to get the word out. Which I hopefully have done herewith. It's a great deal, and it's still open, too.
